The famous British pastor, the prince of preachers, Charles Spurgeon, loved reading books. He had an impressive library that would have made most people drop their jaw. It was huge!
Spurgeon was a big advocate for reading. He once remarked:
“Give yourself unto reading. The man who never reads will never be read; he who never quotes will never be quoted. He who will not use the thoughts of other men’s brains proves that he has no brains of his own. You need to read.”
Reading books is an unavoidable part of the Christian life and spiritual growth. After all, God speaks to us through His written revelation. In our world today, we can choose between physical books and e-books. There are many good benefits of reading physical books. But today I want to give you four reasons why you should consider reading e-books.
You should read e-books because they are accessible, available, affordable, and audible.
E-books Are Accessible
Imagine for a moment that we had the great privilege to travel back to Spurgeon’s time to tell him that his personal library of about 12,000 volumes could be contained and accessed on a small device. He would have thought we were joking. He might have been curious and tried to squeeze a dozen of his books into his suitcase to see if it was possible. It would have been quite fun to witness.
Although it would have seemed impossible to Spurgeon, that is what is accessible to us today on a small e-book reader or our smartphone. It’s mind-blowing, but we can carry a whole library of books with us comfortable and accessible everywhere, thanks to e-books.
Practical speaking it allows you to read wherever and whenever. You can start reading on your smartphone, stop to do something else, and then pick it up where you left on your computer since e-books are accessible and compatible with all modern devices. Unlike Spurgeon, we don’t need to devote large spaces of our much smaller houses as personal libraries today because all our e-books are accessible on a small device.
E-books are not only accessible for reading, but they are also easy and fast to get a hold on.
E-books Are Available
Do you remember back in the days when it took two long weeks to receive a book ordered from Amazon.com? Thankfully those days are long gone.
Today, e-books are available instantaneously after a simple one-click checkout process. It has never been easier to have books available in seconds.
Now, this is very helpful and convenient for active readers in general, but students in particular, because assignments are due weekly and too much waiting time will frustrate the study process and produce much unnecessary stress.
It’s true, on the one hand, that some have libraries available with thousands of books and a brilliant librarian to help you find the exact book you need. But Amazon.com, on the other hand, has a dynamic search feature available that allows you to search for any book, author, title, or topic in seconds.
So, the amount of time you will be spending finding, lending, and returning or purchasing books is too large compared to a simple click on your e-book reader.
E-books are readily available for our convenience. They are also very cheap compared to physical books.
E-books Are Affordable
If we look at Amazon.com, which is the world’s leading and biggest online bookstore, we find that a normal hardcover book cost at average about $16.00 while you can get an e-book for about $9.00. That’s a difference of $7.00 per book.
Now, let’s do some basic math to show the significant savings using e-books. According to Pew Research Center, “The typical college graduate or someone with an advanced degree read an average of 17 books in 2015.” 17 books * $7.00 = $119. That’s quite a bit of saving every year. In 10 years, you would have saved almost $1200 on books, which is a significant amount.
And let’s be honest, we work hard, but despite all the effort, most of us don’t have an unlimited tab of riches that we can access to purchase books when we have paid our rent, utilities, food, insurance, gas, vacation, loans, tuition and other expenses.
So, the benefits of more affordable books can, in the long run, have a positive effect on our budget.
But the benefits of e-books don’t stop with the amount of money you can save. I kept one of the best advances of e-books to the end. It will revolutionize your life and reading.
E-books Are Audible
God has blessed me with three wonderful children who love chasing their daddy. I love it! But it does require much of my energy. In the night when they go to bed, I usually do most of my studies, but my brain is often fried after a long day and all the playing. Maybe you are a dad yourself, or perhaps you are engaged in some other activity during the day that drains all your energy.
For me, the lack of energy in the nights caused me to slow down on my reading. At one point, I didn’t read much at all. This evil spiral continued until I met a guy who slew this enemy. He is my hero.
He told me about a feature on my iPad/iPhone that enabled me to listen to an e-book while reading. In other words, it turns my e-book into an audible book. It helps me to read faster, concentrate better, and memorize more. I only need to swipe two fingers down the screen from top to bottom to enable this feature.
Edgar Dale was a famous American educator who made several important contributions to audio and visual learning. He unknowably and interestingly enough underlined the importance of audible reading. He said that we remember just 10% of what we read but 50% of what we see and hear. When you see and read the text on your e-book reader and listen to it spoken at the same time, you can improve your learning ability and memory up to 40%.
Think about it for a moment. Imagine that you could remember 40% more of everything you read. The audible feature available in e-books could completely transform your reading experience and not least, your studying process and learning.
The Bottom Line
The reasons why you should consider reading e-books is very compelling. It allows you to access your library of e-books everywhere and instantaneously purchase books and have them available within seconds. It helps you stay within budget because e-books are affordable. And it ensures you get all your reading done and learn the most as you listen to your e-books audible while reading.
It is pretty amazing! Life is short and every second is valuable. E-books will surely enhance and enrich your reading, spending, and learning!
It’s never too late to start reading e-books.
